The 14 Pro features the same 6.1in OLED display and luxury stainless steel and glass design as previous versions, but the huge notch at top of the screen containing the cameras for Face ID has been replaced by a 31% smaller pill-shaped design Apple calls the "dynamic island".

To accommodate system warnings and continuing messages, such as charging status, album art, a small waveform when playing music, or a countdown timer, the pill is animated, expanding and contracting. One tap opens the app, while holding down the notch shows more of the notice, including controls for the music player.

With one slight issue, it is remarkably handy for information that needs to be seen quickly. When the notch opens up, the 3/4/5G indication is obscured, making it impossible to determine when you are in a data black hole.

The Face ID logo that appears when making a purchase is one animation that uses the pill as its focal point. The iOS 16 operating system, which is installed on the iPhone 14 Pro and all other iPhones going back to the iPhone 8, makes the entire experience feel lively and entertaining.

The A16 Bionic chip from Apple, which is 10% quicker than the company's prior A15 CPUs, makes the 14 Pro the fastest iPhone currently available. It can perform anything you could want to do with a smartphone and will keep operating quickly for years to come.

The battery life is respectable but less consistent than on other iPhones. The battery lasts roughly 39 hours with 5.5 hours of active use when the 14 Pro is left flat on a desk for the majority of the day. The phone lasts roughly 45 hours between charges if you keep it in your pocket, which turns off the display.
